Setting clear rules
A short internal mobility policy removes most of the uncertainty. It should cover:
- Eligibility. For example, a minimum time in the current role and satisfactory performance.
- Process. How to apply, whether the current manager is informed, and how selection works.
- Selection. Internal candidates assessed against the same criteria as external ones, using structured methods.
- Pay. How pay is set in the new role, using the grade and range of the destination role rather than negotiation.
- Timing. A reasonable notice period for release from the current team.
Moves between group entities
Groups with several legal entities, including mainland and free zone companies or operations in more than one GCC country, need extra care. A move between entities can involve a new employment contract, changes to visa and work permit arrangements and questions about how service and end-of-service entitlements carry over. Different entities may also have different pay policies and benefits.
Agree a standard approach for these moves, so that employees know what to expect and the business treats similar cases in the same way.
Making it part of the culture
Internal mobility works when leaders talk about it positively and act on it. Celebrate internal moves, include them in talent reviews and succession planning, and track how many vacancies are filled internally. If that number stays low, ask why.
